Glacier National Park Quarter
The second quarter design to be released in 2011 will be the Glacier National Park Quarter. The site was chosen for the state of Montana. This will represent the seventh release overall in the series featuring parks and sites of America the Beautiful.
The design selected to represent the area features a mountain goat standing on a rocky outcropping, which overlooks the northeast slope of Mount Reynolds. This arrangement serves to provide an impression of the scope of the park, as well as the natural beauty present. During the review stage, both the Commission of Fine Arts and Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee had favored this design.
Glacier National Park was first made into a Forest Preserve in 1900, but later President Taft officially signed legislation to make it the tenth National Park of the United States.
Officially, the Glacier Quarters will be released into circulation on April 4, 2011. However, distribution has been somewhat slow due to the lower mintages and many State Quarters still within the channels of circulation. At earlier dates, numismatic versions of the coin may be available from the United States Mint.
